Computer Aided Design

Goals

  • Get familiarised with various types of Raster and Vector softwares.
  • To know different types of 3d design a software
  • Create a 3d models

Raster softwares

For familiarised with Raster softwares i used GIMP and Mypaint.

GIMP

GIMP is a free, opensource, Raster image editing software. It is the best alternative to Adobe Photoshop. I did some basic operations in gimp

i tried to cut out an image using free select tool.

Pros

  1. Free and open source
  2. Lightweight
  3. support for python: So it may be easier to automate large amount of image editing jobs.

Cons

  1. for me it had more learning curve than that of photoshop.
  2. Hard to find the communities to find the problems occuring
Photoshop

Photoshop is the most popular image editing software by Adobe.I tried with free version of adobe Photoshop

Pros

  1. It was comparatively easy to learn.
  2. More tools than any other raster software i tried.
  3. Better resources online.

Cons

  1. comparatively expensive and closed.
  2. Much more resource intensive

Vector Softwares

Unlike Raster Softwares which consists of pixels, Vector softwares onsists of Paths. So it can preserve the quality of images while resizing and other operations.

I used InkScape and illustrator as my vector softwares

I also tried illustrator for a while. But i decided inkscape is good enough for me for the most of my applications.

3D designing Tools

"In 3D computer graphics, 3D modeling (or three-dimensional modeling) is the process of developing a mathematical representation of any surface of an object (either inanimate or living) in three dimensions via specialized software. The product is called a 3D model"-Wikipedia.

For 3D modelling i used softwares like Fusion360, OpenScad and solidworks

Fusion360

Fusion360 is a widely popular CAD tool from Autodesk. It is very intuitive and very easy to use. As my fist project in Fusion i designed a lensContainer using fusion

After playing around with some tools i decided to mainly use fusion360 as my main tool for 3d design jobs.

neverthless i found Solidworks have similiar or more capability than fusion. But it had shorter license period than Fusion and it shown sluggish performance in my PC.I also find OpenScad is quite intriguing and intresting. But i couldn't be sure whether it works for larger projects. Combined with that fusion had an awesome 3 year student license made my choice no brainer.
