3D Scanning and Printing¶
Group assignment requirements¶
The group assignment for this week is the following:
- Test the design rules for your 3D printer(s)
- Document your work on the group work page and reflect on your individual page what you learned about characteristics of your printer(s)
3D printing machine specs¶
Describe/list the available features and key settings of your 3D printer.
Machine name: | Ultimaker S5 |
---|---|
Max speed: | 300 mm\s |
Max print volume (LxWxH): | 330 X 240 X 300 mm |
Finest possible layer height: | 0.4mm --> 200 - 20 micron |
Filament diameter: | 2.85 mm |
Safety¶
No serious requirement for 3D printers safety just don’t touch the heated parts while the printer is working and never put your hand inside the printer working area while its working
Design rule testing¶
You can use this 3D design test or find another one that tests similar rules.
This test tests Overhang, warping, size accuracy, bridge test, fine details and general accuracy of the machine. The test was created by [Marián Trpkoš/thingverse majda107] and found on link.
Slicing¶
The design was sliced using [Cura] slicer software. {Open source software for 3D printers that generate G-codes from the designed files}
The settings used were the following:
Material: [Ultimaker Yellow PLA]
Rafts: Yes
Support: No
Resolution: [0.1]
wall thickness : 0.4
Infill: [30%] –> Cross 3D
The estimated time to finish printing was [10 hours 41 minutes], estimated amount of material needed was [47 grams \ 5.88 meter]
Printing process¶
The printing process is simple for the ultimaker S5 as we slice using cura then we put the sliced file on the USB and add it to the printer.
Before starting the print we clean the bed then we add adhesive and we wait for the printer to finish.
Overhang¶
The result is disappointing for me I thought it wont defect at 45 as I was sure that more than 45 degree it will defect and start sagging but however the result is not that bad at all so for drafting and fast result it works.
This will require me not to make angles more than 40 degree otherwise I will sacrifice quality.
Bridge Test¶
The bridge test looks normal for me but it shook me that it deformed at 10 mm distance I thought it could handle 20 mm but the overall is not bad at all it just some sagging it won’t affect the overall design just loosing some clean look prototype.
In my design I think the bridging should not exceed 15 mm to have clean looking shape.
Fine details and accuracy¶
The resolution results are really shocking for me, the outer diameter almost as design +0.02 mm and the inner diameter has a big different from the design -0.3 mm which is big number for me, the length has the same different -0.2 mm from what is designed.
That meant i have to give more consideration to inner measurement of my design and also I have to keep in mind that when the value increase for sure the error will be accumulated so it will increase also.
Result¶
The printing process was so smooth and look very easy to do, these settings are considered fine settings so i thought the results are going to be more promising but unfortunately its not.
