KromaCut test on the PrusaXL¶
I first needed to find an alternative to HueForge which is a paid programme to transform colored images into 3D images where each hight has a specific color.
So I asked copilot instead of searching myself.
Q: programs like hueforge but free
And a summary of its answer:
| Tool | Browser‑Based | Open‑Source | Layer Control | STL Export | Filament Swap Instructions |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Kromacut | ✅ | ✅ | ✅ | ✅ | ✅ |
| Filapaint | ✅ | ❓ (free) | ✅ | ✅ | Supports basic layers |
| AutoForge | ✅ (demo) | ✅ | Automated | ✅ |
So I choose Kromacut
I checked the PLA colors that we have and with Mistral AI I created an image with the following prompt:
generate an image of a norwegian fablab viking with the only 5 colors from the following list
blue
orange
galaxy black
white
grey
green
army green
red
galaxy red
mango yellow
algea pigment

Uploaded it to kromacut and setup that I want max 5 layers / Number of colors. Than I hit Apply Quantization. And export the STL
Prusa Slicer¶

So I will skip my struggle part.
In short you put in the height that under which you will use head #1. So you paint from top to bottom.

And the result:
