For week 7, the class explores Computational Couture and computational design methods towards a new view on cloths, garments, and accessories for fashion design, inpired by a new digital design mehtodology.
This week I worked on doing a project about computational couture using Rhinocerous3D/Grasshopper3D where I developed a series of computational designs that I attempted to 3d print using the Ultimaker and Sindoh 3DWox 3D Printer.
It was an opportunity for me to experiment with both Rhino and Grasshopper3d (and some WebWeaver) to develop different types of models and protoypes that could possibly 3dprinting.
I had the opportunity to create different designs using different functions in Rhino/Grasshopper.
Through experimentation and design, I used youtube, pinterest, and even tumblr to experiment with Rhino and Grasshopper. Through my exploration, I saw various designs and tools to make work in Rhino3d and Grasshopper3d and the designs I have the most interest in were the metaballs and weaving and using formulas to create two of those designs.
My research including a lot of exploration about both how to use Grasshopper/Rhino and what I can possibly create out of it. Throughout the week, I looked on Youtube and Pinterest as my biggest inspiration and teacher but I also looked on blogs like Forumularch and Generative Landscape.
Through my exploration of the week, I was able to make 3 designs that allowed me to really explore both the possibility of Rhino/Grasshopper and how to use it effectively.
Time: 2-3 hours
I wanted to really try to learn how to use Rhino (again) and Grasshopper and believed that the Metaball was interesting enough to get some of the scope of Rhino/Grasshopper. So this was a lot of experimenting and figuring out what was what in order to create a Metaball figure. I created a landscape using various formulas and Metaball in Rhino and Grasshopper.
Time: 3-4 hours
In order to do more work in Rhino/Grasshopper. I tried to create a simple weave design that allows for pipes to intersect with one another. A lot of experimenting with culling and flipping that allows for pipes to connect with another. I was able to get some real design experience and learn how to utilize the platform and the function more from this graphic. It was interesting in the pipe and I was wondering if I try this with other curves such as loom. I want to make more pipe weaves and be able to print them out on 3D fabric.
I want to be more experiment with weaveing different graphics to create 3d printed graphics or modular design.
Time: 2 days
I was able to use a Rhino/Grasshopper plugin WebWeaver to take what I learned in the second design to develop a design that could be printed on 3d fabrics. I want to make something both parametric and movable so I curved the surface so that it could possibly be printed and the design is movable. I designed it to stretch and to move and to curve out an environment. It was difficult and I tried a lot of different things and over 2 times due to freezes but it was really important for me to learn this software. Here are the results.
It is continuation of experimenting with fabric and design.
It wasn't a perfect experience because it does take a lot to learn Rhino/Grassshopper. It is a little bit of a learning curve and 3d printing always didn't work so I tried my best to showcase how to utilize Grasshopper and to develop different designs and possibilities you can create with this application.
